Text: Psalm 16:7-end; Hebrews 8:11-20;Date: Sunday 08 January 2012
The “Springboard of Faith” simply put is a place in God where we must locate ourselves as believers in order to hear God properly and enter into our rest. The night seasons here refers to a season of darkness and confusion. The Psalmist here blesses the Lord for giving him counsel. He says, “My reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved”.
Psalm 46:3 - The Lord is saying that the people who shall know deliverance in this year are those who will stand upon His promises. The year is going to be a very tough one but the Lord is our refuge.
Why are God’s people afraid? Is God’s word not potent anymore? No! The problem lies with us. Why we are not able to access God as much as we should is because the flesh is very much alive in us. God’s people have given too much attention to the needs of the flesh. There is a measure of glory in every experience God allows us to pass through.
“Thou will show me the path of life” - The path of life is the path of obedience. Any other path contrary to the path God gives will certainly us lead us to death.
Hebrews 6:20 – The Lord is saying that we should begin now to show diligence unto our calling and vocation if we must enter into our rest. We can come to a place where even if we see a lion, it will never occur to us that we shall be devoured. We must begin to deemphasize the counsel of man and wait upon God for counsel in the night season.
To the man of faith, there is nothing like risk. We must develop the character of waiting upon the Lord to receive the word at His mouth morning and night.
Hebrews 8:11-12 – Do not be slothful. What kills the believer is sin. The soul that sinneth shall die. Do not commit sin, rather commit righteousness.
Hebrews 8:13 – God swore by Himself that SURELY in blessing I will bless you and multiplying I will multiply you.
Hebrew 8: 17 – 18 - The word immutability speaks of “unchangeable”, “ever constant”, irrevocable”. God’s counsels are unchangeable irrespective of the changes of time and environmental factors. God has come too low to our level to make us understand.
Hebrews 8:19-20 - ”We who have fled the world for refuge in God must lay hold (as the only and last chance of survival left to us) on the hope that is set before us, which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast and which enters into that within the veil”. That hope is the anchor for our soul unto the fullness of God (which is within the veil).
Brethren we are invited to stand upon this platform to spring up to enter into our rest in God. We must cut down every weight that is too heavy for us but only at the instance of the Holy Spirit. The ultimate is not just to believe God for his promises but that we might enter into our rest.
Here are a few things that will hinder us from standing upon this platform:
1. Sin – Outright sin will hinder us from accessing God.
2. Compromise (compromise has landed the church where it is today) – It is a deliberate sin, a presumptuous sin. We must like David ask God to deliver us from presumptuous sins.
The ultimate destination of this springboard is the place of our rest. This kind of rest is not speaking of inactivity but a place where by God speaks to us and we hear Him so well that we have absolute peace in the midst of trouble. Agitations, anxiety are not part of this rest. It also speaks of ceasing from our own works. Henceforth, whatever we must do must agree with God’s own will.
As youths and young men, with all the strength at our disposal, what are we doing for the Lord with our strength? God said to Joshua that he was old and yet there was so much land to be taken.
Hebrews 4:11 – 12 - Here alone we are commanded to labour. The word of God tells us not to labour for the meat that perishes. But here it tells us to labour to enter into our rest. The word unbelief here speaks of disobedience. Unbelief is an evil heart. There is provision in God for us to cease from doing our own work. The word of God is the healer of all diseases. We must go back to the written word. The “logos” is the raw materials for the revealed word (”rhema”).
Five things we must do from this passage in order to stand:
1. Let us labour
2. Let us hold fast our profession. What is our profession? Simply Jesus!
3. Let us come boldly to the throne of grace. Be bold!
4. Let us obtain mercy
5. And find grace to help. First we must receive this grace and then we move out to help men.
